The University of Alberta Botanic Garden (formerly the Devonian Botanic Garden) is a stunning 240-acre property located in Parkland County, 15 minutes southwest of Edmonton, with cultivated gardens and plant collections, indoor showhouses, and an extensive nature trail system.

Highlights of the Garden, which was established in 1959, include the Kurimoto Japanese Garden; a Tropical Showhouse with exotic butterflies; Temperate and Arid Showhouses; alpine, herb, rose, peony, lilac, lily and primula collections; Native Peoples Garden; trial beds and much more.

The Garden is an award-winning visitor attraction, a research site, and home to year-round adult and children’s education programming.

Ukrainian Cultural Village

History is brought to life at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an open-air museum where costumed role-players recreate the life of early Ukrainian pioneers that settled in east central Alberta from 1892-1930. Step back in time to hear real stories of hardships and triumphs in Canada’s oldest and at one-time largest bloc settlement of Ukrainian pioneers.

Explore more than 35 relocated and restored structures including a burdei (sod house), a one-room and two-room school, grain elevator, blacksmith shop and three churches of Eastern Byzantine Rite.

Special events take visitors of all ages back to east central Alberta’s cultural and agricultural roots.

Visitor Tips

  • Plan for 2-3 hours to tour our museum and historic buildings.
  • We are an outdoor museum with walking required between our historic buildings.
  • Walking shoes are recommended for our gravel roads.
  • Sunscreen and sun hats are recommended on warm summer days.

Immerse yourself in history at The Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum. Located in the heart of Wetaskiwin’s historic downtown, and with three floors of exhibits, we celebrate local history and heritage. You won’t be able to resist our one-of-kind Pioneer Play Rooms where kids of all ages engage their senses and use real museum artifacts. And that’s just the beginning! Move forward with history as you uncover the dynamic heritage of Wetaskiwin City, County, and the Four Maskwacis Cree Nations through exhibits and interactive displays that span from the time of the dinosaurs to the War Years.
